Network Rail
Network Rail run, maintain and develop Britain’s tracks, signalling system, rail bridges, tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and stations.
There’s a lot you don’t know about Network Rail. Yes, we manage the railway. But what does that even mean? It means running enough track to take you to China and back, twice. It means maintaining and improving signals, tunnels, bridges, viaducts and level crossings. It means owning 2,500 stations and managing some of Britain’s largest and busiest. It means every time you make a journey by train, pass through a station or use something that’s been transported by rail freight, we’ve made it possible. It’s about so much more than getting from A to B. We bring people together, providing the infrastructure that the entire nation relies on, both socially and economically. Rail is already one the safest and greenest form of travel in Britain, but that’s not enough. We want to achieve more. Our focus is on constant improvement, making the railway safer, more reliable and the most cost effective it can be.Essentially, we’re a public company run as a commercial business. However, as a ‘not for dividend’, operation every penny of profit we make goes straight back into improving the railway. We’re taking 19th century infrastructure and merging it with 21st century technology. When our work began in 2002 there were 18,000 trains running every day. Now there are 24,000. At the same time, we’ve improved punctuality and reduced the cost of running the railway by £1bn. We’re an incredibly ambitious organisation. We’re changing landscapes, powering economies. And we’re doing it all while catering for 1.2 billion passenger journeys each year. Our success depends on a motivated, highly skilled workforce. It takes some 35,000 people to meet our promises to the people of Britain. It’s a massive responsibility that inspires everyone who works here. As a graduate you’ll share in a tangible sense of pride, carrying out work that touches the lives of millions.
