Barclays is a major global financial services provider in retail & commercial banking, credit cards, investment banking & wealth management.

Barclays is a major global financial services provider engaged in retail and commercial banking, credit cards, investment banking, wealth management and investment management services with an extensive international presence in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia.

With over 300 years of history and expertise in banking, Barclays operates in over 50 countries and employs approximately 145,000 people. Barclays moves, lends, invests and protects money for more than 49 million customers and clients worldwide. Our structure Barclays is made up of two ‘Clusters’: Global Retail and Commercial Banking (GRCB), and Investment Banking and Investment Management (IBIM), each of which has a number of Business Units.

The third major area of the business is Group Centre, which comprises all our essential support functions. Our leadership Barclays Group Chairman is Marcus Agius, and the Group Chief Executive is John Varley. They are supported by Barclays Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. Global presence Barclays Group headquarters is at 1 Churchill Place in London, UK, but we have operations all over the world, with products and services to meet the needs of customers and clients in local markets.

Barclays runs nine graduate programmes across its Global Retail and Commercial Banking Business Unit and support functions. These include placements in Barclays Commercial Bank division, Retail Banking, Marketing, Product and Distribution, Human Resources, Technology, Tax, Treasury, and Barclaycard. The programmes vary in length from 12 months to three years, and the grades required for application vary depending on the business area.

An eight-week summer internship scheme also runs for students in their penultimate year, or final-year students who plan to take a gap year after graduation and are expecting the equivalent of a 2:1 degree in any discipline. This programme provides valuable work experience and potentially a fast-track offer to one of Barclays graduate programmes.

Summer internships are available in six business areas: Barclaycard Credit Risk, Human Resources, Technology, Tax, Retail Banking and Barclays Commercial Bank. In the Investment Banking and Investment Management (IBIM) Business Unit, programmes at Barclays Capital, Barclays Global Investors and Barclays Wealth offer 10-week summer internships and graduate positions in Europe, Asia, the USA and the Middle East. All are designed to ensure new recruits reach their full potential, working towards internationally recognised professional qualifications and developing an excellent understanding of how best to meet clients’ needs. Absa, a South African-based bank majority-owned by Barclays, also runs a one-year graduate programme.

Rewards and benefits

Although each graduate programme differs, depending on location, specialism and Business Unit, Barclays commitment to excellent training, competitive rewards and inspiring work is evident in every area of the Group. Career progression Even the most talented graduates need strong support to realise their full potential, and each graduate programme offers a range of training and development opportunities designed to identify and enhance each candidate’s strengths.
