Careers in Retail & Sales
So are you into selling stuff? That's great. Nearly every company in the world needs to sell, so you're in the money there.
Among the usual misconceptions around the retail and sales fields, the most common is the notion that you need to talk too much and push products down people's throats in order to make a sale.
Understanding customers' needs is more important than persuading them to buy from you.
Selling, however, has a lot more to do with listening to what the consumers are saying, directly or indirectly, on the phone or via the traffic stats on your e-commerce website. Understanding customers' needs is more important than persuading them to buy from you.
The retail industry has much more to offer than sales jobs though. Fashion designers, human resource officers, marketers, PR advisors, buyers, merchandisers, finance people... the list of skills needed in retail goes on and on.
So if you're into the rush and the fast pace of it, and as long as you keep in mind that the consumer is always right, this is the place for you. Just remember, coffee is for closers!
