Calling all students and graduates – Essex needs you!
Essex is a great place to live and work. The great diversity of the county gives rise to mixes of rural and urban economies. The opportunities are huge whether you’re pursuing a professional career, looking for a worthwhile local job, interested in flexible working, looking to return to work or just starting out.
Essex’s 1,300 square miles and 1.4 million people stretch from Constable Country to the Thames Estuary, from the dynamic M11 corridor to the traditional seaside resorts of Clacton and Walton. They encompass England’s oldest recorded town in Colchester and two of its newest in Basildon and Harlow. Along with Chelmsford, the county town, these three towns are the major population centres.
Adjoining London to the south west and East Anglia to the north, Essex is of immense strategic importance. In the south is one of the country’s key growth areas in Thames Gateway. In the north east is the country’s major port to northern Europe, Harwich. In the west is Stansted Airport, an international gateway to London and the rest of the country.
Essex is the second most populated county in England, accounting for a quarter of the population of the East of England, yet almost 75% of its land area is agricultural. The rural peace of the scattered settlements in mid and north Essex contrasts with the bustling conurbations to the south. The south east of the county has the highest concentration of people, with one third of a million people living in an area of 40 square miles.
