@LegalTrainee Training Contract series (4/9) – What is the most rewarding aspect of working in the department?

For me, the greatest rewards come from the team working and collaborative atmosphere in the department. As a trainee your role is to assist and to learn, developing both of these skills requires support and encouragement from more senior members of the team. I enjoy the fact that more senior members of the team really want to see trainees progress and develop their experience and knowledge of the specific area of law. Law can be highly technical, demanding a broad knowledge base and building this knowledge is a satisfying process. In my department I have had to quickly come to grips with several taxes, each with their own legislative quirks.

This ‘in it together’ atmosphere also translates into an active department sociaRead morel life both with the immediate department and the wider product group. There are a lot of social events for trainees particularly with the Birmingham Trainee Solicitor Society. All this contributes to an enjoyable, challenging and intellectually stimulating Training Contract at Eversheds.

@LegalTrainee Training Contract series (3/9) – What type of work do you do on a day to day basis?

I am currently sitting in my first seat as a trainee in the Manchester Construction team. The work I do is unique in that I do both contentious and non-contentious work. The tasks I do therefore vary widely with each day. One of the main things I have been working on is a large, international arbitration. We have recently been at the disclosure stage so I have spent a lot of time doing document review and deciding what documents can and cannot be disclosed to the other side. Other work I typically get involved in is research tasks, drafting notes of advice for clients on a range of issues and organising documents that need executing for the various construction projects we are involved in. I have also been exposed to a number of typical trRead moreainee tasks such as bundling trial documents, proof reading and taking notes at client meetings. Furthermore, I have undertaken a number of business development initiatives, including researching and writing presentations for client seminars and researching projects and companies to try and highlight opportunities for new work and clients.

@LegalTrainee Training Contract series (2/9) – What is the most challenging aspect of working in the department?

The London Financial Institutions Group has a strong reputation as the best in the City; this is a high standard to live up to (especially as a first seat trainee), but you feel like you’re part of the team from the off. For the first few weeks the main challenge was trying to understand the enormous amount of industry vocabulary; everything has an acronym! The great thing about the work is its variety, there’s plenty to keep you busy and intellectually stimulated. I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a number of big projects, which has given me the opportunity to work more closely with clients and expand my understanding of this complex and ever-changing area of law. At the moment the most challenging aspect is fitting eRead moreverything in!

@LegalTrainee Vacation Scheme series (9/9) – How is the vacation scheme structured?

The Eversheds’ vacation scheme provides students with the opportunity to spend time two of the firm’s departments over a two week period.

The vac scheme begins with a warm welcome from the training partner and HR staff followed by an induction which comprises of ice breaker sessions, an office tour and IT training. The rest of the first week will be spent in departments experiencing what it is like to work at Eversheds on a day-to-day basis. Each student is provided with a ‘buddy’ in their respective department – this is a junior member, usually the trainee, who is there to offer support and advice, as well as offering more of an insight by way of their experiences at the firm to date.

In the second week, students move on to their next departmentRead moreand are again assigned a ‘buddy’ for the week. Towards the end of the week, the students undertake various exercises, including a group negotiation, as part of the training contract application process.

Throughout the two weeks there are a number of socials and extra-curricular activities which take place. These include an initial meet and greet social with the trainee committee, an evening dinner with a selection of the partners and a social with the current trainee intake – typically bowling and drinks. One afternoon is also spent getting involved with the firm’s corporate social responsibility activities. In Birmingham, we visited the Thinktank where we gave an interactive science lesson to groups of school children.

The vac scheme is an invaluable opportunity to experience firm’s culture and working practices first-hand and offers a level of insight which brochures, websites and legal press just cannot match. Overall, it is a really interesting and positive experience for any aspiring solicitor.

@LegalTrainee Training Contract series (1/9) – What is your typical day like in the department?

My typical day is busy and varied. The majority of the day is spent on reviewing, drafting and advising on documents, for example reviewing and reporting on a commercial lease or meeting with clients and advising them how to structure a deal. I do get a lot of exposure to clients as well as industry practitioners such as agents and surveyors.

When involved in a transaction from the very beginning, I sometimes think of myself as a forensic investigator – the client needs to be aware of any issues that bind the land as it might affect its use. New transactions therefore often begin with an information-gathering exercise: a review of title deeds, documents and searches and enquiries made in respect of the land.

In contrast, completion ofRead morea transaction means dealing with the Land Registry so that our clients’ interests in the land are protected. We now have a dedicated Customer Service team at the Land Registry who deal with all our applications. This arrangement is very helpful especially if you need to clarify a procedural point.

0830h – The daily walk to work. Umbrella up.

0837h – Niftily dodge lamppost whilst checking BlackBerry.

0855h – Arrive at work, get a coffee and set voicemail

0900h – Prioritise tasks for day and respond to any urgent emails.

0910h – Check daily news and sport.

0914h – Receive post. Not a package from Amazon. Disappointed. Discover it’s something we have been chasing for a while. Happy days.

0920h – Continue with some drafting I started yesterday.

1015h – I get asked to do a bit of urgent research on a certain legal obscurity, so I crack on with it and report back.

1105h – Back to the drafting. Finish this off and send to supervisor for review.

1130h – Start completing some post completion formalities for a deal and before I know it, it’s lunchtime.

1301h – Pop to town to eat at a certain sushi chain with a couple of friends.

1302h – Come back to get umbrella.

1358h – Back from lunch. Check emails to see a client has come back with a query. Review this and talk it over with one of my supervisors before responding.

1440h – Talk through a new instruction with supervisor. It’s quite a complex multi-jurisdictional transaction, so spend the rest of the afternoon going through documents required to complete.

1606h – Grab a coffee and quick chat with another trainee in the kitchen.

              1611h – Back to the documents…

1804h – Finished reviewing the documents for the day. Close down Carpe Diem timers, grab coat and head off home.

@LegalTrainee Vacation Scheme series (7/9) – What did you think of the assessment centre?

The assessment centre itself was scheduled to take place between 9am and 3pm. Initially I was extremely nervous at the thought of a 6 hour long assessment, however, the day proved to be g enuinely enjoyable.

The day began with a 45 minute written document review exercise, followed by a group negotiation task. Over lunch we had the opportunity to speak with some of the (then) current Eversheds trainees and the day concluded with an interview.

I thought the range of activities were extremely useful, as they provided me with a valuable insight into the type of work a trainee will undertake. In particular, the document review and negotiation exercises were very different from anything I had undertaken at University or Law School. The fast-pacedRead moreelement of the assessment meant that I found the day challenging, stimulating and good fun.
