  Chicago is an amazing architecture city, I can spend hours there just wandering around. There are so many landmark hotels, boutique hotels, and downright quirky hotels in and around the area. The Kohler Festival of Beer is coming up soon. Who knew the folks who make faucets and sinks also run a five-star hotel & spa!

I met one of my entrepreneurial inspirations last night - Elon Musk - the Founder of SpaceX and Tesla. Elon was one of the co-founders of X.com which then merged to become Paypal. He is one of the key members of Silicon Valley's so called 'Paypal Mafia'. He is a phenomenal entrepreneur with such a great vision for the future - both in space travel and car travel.

When chatting with him I asked him a question I don't imagine he had been asked before - 'If SpaceX and Tesla were to have a baby would you create an electric aeroplane company?' He laughed and said that electric aeroplanes would be possible in the future. Perhaps this will be his next company... Thinking about this more I think the aeroplane industry needs to be more disrupted. There has not been a major innovation and it is unlikely to be led by Airbus or Boeing. The challe… Read morenge here is the cost of entering this market space as R&D is prohibitively expensive. Perhaps the innovation coming out of both Tesla and SpaceX could be combined to be applied to air travel.

I also spoke to Elon about the challenges of running 2 companies. He said over the last year he spent most of his time with Tesla however, recently he has gone back to 50/50 between them. I struggle to have nearly enough time to run one company let alone two. This is one of the many reasons I have such respect for Elon.

  @Serena totally! With all of our options for travel it is tough to stay put! #work hard #play hard :) It depends on the level of position, but in general anyone under 3 yrs with Expedia starts with 15 days. Above 3 yrs, 20 days and 7 + yrs, 25 days :)

Technical recruiting: what we can learn from the NFL

Traditional draft wisdom categorises players into well-established positions. Each position targets people of specific height, weight, and skillset. Contrast this with the modern game, which has found ways to benefit from finding players that do not necessarily fit solidly into one category. The example given in this article is the TE/WR hybrid known as the “Joker tight end”. Traditional tight ends need to block and catch some passes. Joker tight ends catch a lot more passes, and block a lot less. They are bigger and slower than true wide receivers, but smaller and faster than true tight ends. In fact, they may not block well at all – blocking considered a core skill at this position.

If you were to judge a joker tight end against a traditional tight end – they would fail in a ver… Read morey important part of their job: blocking. If you were to judge them against traditional wide receivers, they would fail in the speed department. However, if you can find a way to use this person’s unique combination of skills in a hybrid role, this can be a huge asset to a team. Some examples of joker TEs are Rob Gronkowski, Vernon Davis, and Kellen Winslow, sr. A different type of example would be QB/RB hybrids like Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, and RG3.

What does this have to do with technical recruiting?

We may have job openings for specific roles: java developer, client-side developer, automation tester, TPM. We may have a specific set of criteria in mind for each of these roles. The next time you interview someone that doesn’t fit your criteria for the job opening you have, take a moment to consider what other skills they have that could be relevant.

On my teams, I have TPMs and engineers with design backgrounds, I have engineers with test experience, and I have TPMs with statistics knowledge. I believe these teams are stronger because of the unique group of skills that are slightly different from the norm. Let me know if you have found anything similar.

  On a smaller scale, when I first got hired as a QA I had very different skills as the rest of the QA team. I was very analytical but didn't have a computer science degree.
  However, my old manager thought that my background in customer service would give the QA department a touch of UX and that my communications skills would smooth the communication between the QA team and the dev team.
