Your specific training, as a graduate starter is designed to fit with the job you are undertaking and is aimed at equipping you with the necessary skills to become an effective leader in the organisation. ExxonMobil, along with the world renowned London Business School, has developed the ExxonMobil Graduate Development Programme (EGDP), a unique offering amongst graduate employers. This two year modular programme equips graduates with a portfolio of fundamental business and people management skills. The programme is split into seven modules: six of which are held at the London Business School in central London. Regular reviews and appraisals with your supervisor keep your continual growth on track, but you will be actively encouraged to take ownership of your own career by identifying personal development needs and opportunities in line with business needs. You will also have a mentor who will help you launch and build your career.
ExxonMobil is the world's largest non-government producer and marketer of equity gas. Total sales volumes amount to over 160 billion cubic metres per year. With operations on five continents and in more than 25 countries, we participate in every major gas market in the world. We have a significant interest in power generation, and manage all ExxonMobil's gas and power needs. We also manage ExxonMobil's worldwide Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) business. Gas & Power Marketing's European base is in Leatherhead, Surrey, with other offices in the Netherlands and Germany. We account for about 40% of ExxonMobil's worldwide gas sales and about 30% of ExxonMobil's NGL business. European gas markets are evolving rapidly with increasing competition, the development of new sales hubs, and increasing imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
ExxonMobil recently announced a 25 year agreement with QatarGas for the import of LNG from Qatar to the UK commencing in 2007. Deals such as this, along with similar contracts anticipated for Spain, France and Italy, clearly demonstrate dramatic changes to the dynamics of the European gas market.
Global careers in a growing market
The growing worldwide gas market is providing ever-widening career opportunities for graduates. ExxonMobil sells its gas and power primarily to other energy companies, distribution companies and large industrial consumers. Contracts represent high monetary values and can be the subject of lengthy and detailed negotiations with highly professional counterparties. Bringing gas, power or NGL's from source to customer involves the usage and management of complex and high value assets such as generation plants, processing plants, transmission networks, underground storage facilities, LNG ships and terminals. Keeping the commercial negotiations in line with the highly technical nature of developing new projects requires close co-operation with the other Upstream organisations. We oversee all aspects of the value chain, and are therefore in a good position to maximise overall value for the corporation by co-ordinating all functions involved. As you can see, Gas & Power Marketing covers a much wider range of activities than its name suggests.
A typical career might lead to you forecasting future demand for gas, negotiating multi-million pound sales or service contracts with customers, or optimising delivery from supply sources. Regular job rotations will ensure continued professional growth in various segments of our business and provide opportunities to develop essential leadership and management skills.

Production and Development
Degree Discipline: Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical or Offshore Engineering
Location: Aberdeen
Engineers
Our Engineers make a valuable contribution from the outset: bringing oil and gas to the surface safely; minimising environmental impact; applying the latest technology and best practices; countering some of the most demanding climates and conditions in the world; and coordinating teams of industry specialists. We want people capable of finding and applying innovative solutions to complex technical problems. The work is challenging; flexibility and mobility are at a premium, the hours can be erratic - but no two days are the same.
Reservoir Engineers - Aberdeen Reservoir Engineers develop a detailed understanding of the distribution of fluids in hydrocarbon reservoirs using state of the art engineering tools, and determine the optimum, economic strategy for producing the oil and gas reserves. A typical first job might be working in a multidisciplinary team to prepare a £15 million well proposal and you will develop a variety of skills ranging from economic evaluation to complex fluid analysis.
Drilling Engineers - Aberdeen Drilling and Completions engineers are responsible for drilling wells. New engineers may be assigned to a manage a single well under the supervision of a Senior Engineer but within a relatively short period you may become responsible for wells involving budgets of £5-10 million. In addition to planning, designing and managing drilling operations you will liaise with external service providers and provide day to day support to offshore activities. The work is varied and regular offshore trips are a feature.
Subsurface Engineers - Aberdeen After wells have been drilled and completed, they are handed over to the Subsurface Engineering team. Subsurface Engineers optimise productivity from both existing wells and new completions, by evaluating reservoir stimulation options, well bore hydraulics and choosing the right downhole production equipment for the conditions. You will be responsible for the mechanical "well-being" of a well, interfacing with service companies for optimum job design and taking responsibility for overall costs and production enhancements.
Facilities Engineers - Aberdeen Facilities Engineers provide technical direction and project management support for a variety of oil and gas producing and processing surface and subsea facilities. You will tackle a wide range of mechanical, structural, process, electrical, instrument and controls activities including implementation of projects to improve process operations, providing engineering expertise for troubleshooting operational problems and for evaluating economic and operational enhancements. You may be required to provide support to onshore processing facilities and offshore producing platforms, work Europe-wide projects or manage studies involving many other disciplines.
Safety, Health & Environmental Engineers (SHE) - Aberdeen SHE Engineers assist with all operational safety requirements and prepare asset risk management plans. You will liaise with regulatory bodies, manage safety case submissions and ensure compliance with company policies, management systems and regulatory requirements. Working closely with engineers from other disciplines you will help plan and execute emergency exercises and monitor safety and environmental performance. Functional Training Within ExxonMobil's Upstream organisation, "Early Competency Milestones " have been identified and training geared to them. Extensive technical and non technical training is provided, in the UK and US, to help young engineers accelerate their skill development in their first assignments and to prepare them for jobs with greater responsibility and help them achieve their career goals.
Graduate Career Path
The Upstream Early Career Development programme allows new engineers to rapidly assimilate the fundamentals for their first role. Guided by career roadmaps that describe career path opportunities and required skills your initial focus will be on understanding the fundamentals within a job family before you progress through a range of broadening and developmental assignments and, eventually, move between technical specialist, generalist and management career paths.
Refining and Chemicals
Degree Discipline: Chemical and Mechanical Engineering
Location: Fawley, Southampton
The Esso refinery at Fawley, on Southampton Water, is the largest in the UK, processing some 15 million tonnes of crude oil per year and supplying a sixth of all the oil products used in the UK. The site is also home to a petrochemical complex, operated by ExxonMobil Chemical, that manufactures over one million tonnes of high-purity chemicals every year. Whilst producing the petroleum and chemical products demanded by the market place, the Fawley site is committed to achieving outstanding safety, health and environmental performances.
ExxonMobil Chemical's Fife Ethylene Plant, located on the east coast of Scotland, is one of the largest and most modern ethylene plants in Europe. It has an annual production of over 800,000 tonnes of ethylene which is widely used in the production of everyday articles from washing-up liquids to car components. Much of the ethylene is used as a high-quality feedstock in our European polymers businesses. Supply and Distribution, based at the Esso refinery, plan and optimise all refinery operations, and the scheduling and transport of all refined products to the terminals. They also manage the integrated pipeline and terminal network as well as overseeing the commercial and contractual negotiations.

Typical career path opportunities exist to gain an array of experiences in your first few years with the company, from project development and commissioning, plant troubleshooting and optimisation, to operations planning or advanced control. The scope for overseas assignments is similarly diverse for both technical and supervisory experiences owing to the large number of countries in which we operate refining and chemical facilities.
You will be in constant contact with a large variety of people, plant operators on the units or technology specialists.
