Metronet operates through two separate companies, each involving responsibility for a set of very different lines, and each with its own distinctive engineering challenges. Metronet Rail BCV is responsible for the so-called ‘deep Tube’ lines, including Bakerloo, Central, Victoria and Waterloo & City.
Metronet Rail SSL focuses on the sub-surface lines, including the Metropolitan, District, Circle, Hammersmith & City and the East London lines.
When you consider that sections of the Metropolitan line opened in 1863 as the first underground railway in the world, you can appreciate some of the engineering challenges facing Metronet in the 21st century.
Metronet recruits graduates into three engineering disciplines:
- Mechanical Engineering,
- Civil Engineering and,
- Electrical Engineering.
They are looking for intelligent people with vision and technical knowledge to develop new methods of solving old problems and better ways to anticipate and avoid new ones. Furthermore, you need to have the skills to manage engineering projects through to successful completion in an environment that is challenging and sometimes unpredictable. To join the Metronet graduate scheme, you will need either a 2:2 MEng or at least a 2:1 BEng. If you hold the latter, you must be committed to part-time study, funded by Metronet to achieve a Master’s degree.
Upon joining Metronet as a graduate, you will embark on a two or three year training and development programme (depending on your discipline). This will give you exposure to on-the-job learning and off-the-job training which will enable you to make a clear, fully-informed decision about your first job role with us, as you come towards the end of your training programme.
The graduate programmes give you a powerful combination of three-to six-month placements, involving real responsibility on live projects, with training programmes that cover the full range of skills in which you will need to be fully competent and confident – business, legal and financial issues as well as purely professional ones. Between them, they give you everything you need to maintain the fastest possible progress towards chartered status.
From the moment you join the company, your role and responsibilities will be fully mapped out, and you’ll know exactly where to turn for expert support and guidance from senior engineers and managers who are only too happy to give you the time you need, the answers you’re seeking, and the practical support to keep your professional development moving towards chartered status and beyond. You’ll have a mentor to give you the day-to-day advice and support to stay on top of your job. But you’ll also have a sponsor – a senior team member who’ll take a personal interest in your professional development.
