They are strong in corporate finance; financial institutions; energy and infrastructure; transport; and technology. They focus research, know-how and expertise on five strategically important areas where the firm and its clients have particular interests: international corporate finance, financial institutions, transportation, energy and infrastructure, and technology. The firm encourages its lawyers to develop their industry knowledge and expertise through participation in one or more of their international business groups. The industry groups bring together lawyers from across their international network. In all these areas, the firm works primarily for international corporate and financial institutions on large, complex, cross-border transactions, offering them the full range of business legal services. Most firms operate a seat system in which trainees spend six months each in four different departments. The training contract at Norton Rose is based on a six-seat pattern. The first four seats (16 months) include one seat in each of its core departments – corporate finance, banking and dispute resolution – plus an optional seat in one other, non-core departments – employment, pensions and incentives, tax, competition and EC, intellectual property and technology, or property, planning and environmental. During the fourth seat, extensive consultation will take place between yourself and HR to customise the last eight months of the training contract. This can be adapted to accommodate a range of scenarios, including an international seat or client secondment. This process will allow you the widest possible exposure to the different areas of the firm’s business. It will equip you with the knowledge to make the best and most informed choice of qualification area. This choice is a major decision that will determine the nature of your working life for the foreseeable future.
