With award-winning, state-of-the-art riverside offices in the heart of the City of London, SJ Berwin is a fantastic place to build a career. Our building earned one of just six ‘Citations of Excellence’ in the 2007 Business Week/Architectural Record Awards thanks to the view, facilities and services that go together to provide us with a world-class workplace and a real community atmosphere throughout the firm.
It’s a building that’s about more than just offices. As well as several eating outlets including a free staff restaurant, you’ll have access to physiotherapists, an osteopath, an in-house GP clinic in our ‘wellness centre’, and yoga and pilates classes. You’ll also have outstanding facilities at your disposal, not to mention the rooftop garden – the largest of its kind in London.
We don’t just give the best views to a select few. Everyone who works here can see London stretched out below them, giving a truly inspirational working environment where your career can reach new horizons. We think that where you work affects how you work. And in order to provide everyone with the opportunity to excel, we believe in providing a healthy, stimulating environment that all at SJ Berwin can benefit from, both personally and professionally.
Trainees are integral to the SJ Berwin culture as they represent the firm’s future. This year, for the first time, all of our future trainees are attending BPP law school in London and we have introduced various events, to be held at our offices, throughout the year so that future trainees can be included as part of the SJ Berwin team before their official start date. We are very excited about this new initiative.
We currently recruit about 50 trainees a year. We are looking for enthusiastic, bright, commercially-minded, team players who understand the value of common sense to join us. If you are looking for a career at a city law firm that works within the European and International marketplaces then we may be the firm for you.
What Do Clients Want From Their Lawyer?
Today, its no longer sufficient to simply advise upon the law. Clients want lawyers who understand their business and who can correlate how the transaction and specific transactional issues impact upon it. They require not only advice on the legal aspects of a deal to ensure they comply with all relevant law and regulation, but also want a lawyer to bring their commercial expertise to the table. Clients want to know what the current market practice is and who better to advise on the market’s state of play than a lawyer whose every day is spent negotiating similar points on behalf of a wide range of clients. In many ways, the perfect private equity lawyer, from the point of view of the client, is one who enjoys solving business problems using the tools of finance and law.
The Role Of A Trainee Solicitor?
As a trainee solicitor in the Private Equity department at SJ Berwin, you will be involved in a wide variety of tasks, such as: legal due diligence – a fact-finding exercise where you review commercial agreements and also conduct company searches, with the objective of reporting to the client any information which you think the client, in its position as the purchaser, ought to be aware of; verification of public documents e.g. a prospectus – an exercise to ensure the accuracy of statements made in documents which relate to quoted companies; researching points of law; drafting memoranda of advice for clients; and drafting legal agreements under supervision. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to work on high profile, often complex cross-border transactions and will get a buzz out of reading about those deals in international business news sheets such as the FT.
Work Hard/Play Hard?
There is no denying that private equity lawyers work hard. If you are thinking of a career in any top City law firm then with that career choice comes the need for energy and drive. And in return for that hard work and energy come the rewards – be they financial or the adrenaline produced by the thrill of the game. In a top City law firm, like SJ Berwin, you will be working with some of the leading financial investors, learning from the best to be the best. You will be provided with as much independence, responsibility and/or support as you can handle – most City law firms invest heavily in making you the best lawyer you can be. Depending on what your ambitions are, the world could be your oyster as a private equity lawyer.
