Social Media

Social media is a very broad term that is carelessly tossed around a lot. Any media is an instrument of communication, like a newspaper, television, website or a radio. However social media, in web 2.0 terms, is characterised by participation, openness, conversation, communication and connectedness. At present, there are essential six kinds of social media: Social Networks e.g. Facebook, Bebo, MySpace Blogs Microblogging e.g. Twitter Wikis e.g. Wikipedia Online Forums Content communities e.g. Flickr, YouTube, Spotify, Del.icio.us, SoundCloud Social media is thus built on the basic evolutionary notions of sharing ideas, collaborating and participating to create art or literature, thinking, debating and discoursing, seeking people who might be friends, allies or romantic partners and self-expression; All concepts that civilisation was built on. Due to the high-powered and fast-paced nature of this form of communication, new ideas, communities, friendships, business models and technologies develop here at a dizzying rate.
