On the subject of dress code - here is another interesting one. I have stubble. I trim it every couple of days, but its stubble. The unshaven look. Traditionally you are either clean shaven or have a beard. Many, Many years ago, a very successful company whom I was working for sent someone home to shave. Sales of beard and stubble trimmers (as they are now called) advanced 14 percent in 2010, 17 percent last year and should top that again in 2012. Now that stat alone tells you how many guys now have stubble, however are people being judged in the same way as not wearing a suit and tie? Is stubble "accepted" as smart office attire?

If an individual was not wearing a tie, would you take them seriously? It is my personal belief that times are changing and you don't have to be in a suit and tie to be respected and conduct serious business. Some of the most inspirational and successful business people I have ever come across do not regularly wear a suit & tie. What do you all think about dress code within the business world?

  In the same way you should tailor your covering letter on each job application for the role you should tailor your dress code to be appropriate for what what you are doing. The saying used to be 'you can never be overdressed' does this still hold?

  That's an interesting point Adam. I am certainly conscious about how I'm perceived in a meeting, particularly with a new client, and I certainly assess who it is I'm meeting with and dress accordingly. Turn up in a suit and tie to a creative agency and instantly you lose credibility. Vice versa, jeans and a casual shirt at a top tier financial organisation, in many cases the same applies. I have attended many meetings with law firms, banks etc dressed in jeans and suits. Sometimes I'm greeted b… Read morey individuals also wearing jeans in senior positions. I don't believe this affected business - in fact some of these companies are now clients. Just like Richard Branson states in the article "In an individualized, interconnected culture, your achievements speak for themselves. The suit & tie is an anachronism." It would be great to get some further feedback here from hiring managers!? :)
