UW was founded in September 1886, and opened in September 1887. The university also offers outreach education in communities throughout Wyoming and online.The University of Wyoming consists of seven colleges: agriculture, arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, health sciences, and Law. The university maintains a 14 to1 student-faculty ratio - one of the lowest such ratios among four-year schools in the west. UW also offers a variety of cultural and social activities. The university offers 89 bachelor's, 77 master's, and 29 doctoral degrees. Professional pharmacy, juris doctor (law) and education degrees are also available.In addition to on-campus classes in Laramie, the university’s Outreach School offers more than 30 degree, certificates and endorsement programs to distance learners across the state and beyond. These programs are delivered through the use of technology, such as online and video conferencing classes. The Outreach School has nine regional centers across the state, with several on community college campuses, to give Wyoming residents access to a university education without relocating to Laramie.

Part-time employees working 50% time or more earn sick leave on a pro-rata basis.Vacation - Exempt staff and faculty with fiscal year appointments earn 22 days of vacation annually. Non-exempt benefited employees earn vacation as follows: 0-2 years - 10 working days; 3-6 years - 16 working days; 7 or more years - 22 working days.Post-Doctoral Research Associates may request up to 22 days leave with pay a year. Part-time employees working 50% time or more earn annual leave on a pro-rata basis.Administrative Holidays - Benefited employees receive ten paid holidays each year, as well as three paid days off between Christmas and New Year's Eve.RETIREMENTGroup Retirement Account - New employees make an irrevocable election to participate in either the Wyoming Retirement System (defined benefit) or TIAA-CREF (defined contribution) retirement plan. The University contributes 12.69% of the employee's gross salary and the employee contributes 1.43%, for a total of 14.12%.Supplemental Retirement Account - Employees may contribute to a 403(b) tax sheltered annuity and/or 457(b) deferred compensation account and receive a $20 per month employer match.INSURANCEHealth and Dental Insurance - The University participates in self-insured plans provided by the State of Wyoming. Private carriers are contracted with to process claims. They are Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans with a nation-wide network of providers. Employees, spouses and children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage. The University contributes approximately 85% toward the monthly premium for all benefited employees. The health insurance has several different deductible options, all with prescription drug coverage and wellness benefits. One of the deductible options provides the opportunity to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA). The preventive dental plan covers 100% of charges for preventive services. The optional dental plan covers other eligible dental services. Employees may elect to pay insurance premiums on a pre-tax basis and/or contribute to a Medical or Dependent Day Care Reimbursement Account.Other Insurance - The University pays 100% of the premium for a long-term disability (LTD) coverage for all benefited employees. Optional, decreasing term life insurance policies are available. The State of Wyoming offers voluntary, employee paid options for vision coverage, short-term disability and long-term care insurance.More information about insurance, including current premium rates, can be obtained from the State of Wyoming.OTHER BENEFITSTuition Waiver - For full and part-time employees, the University will waive assessed tuition for one course (up to six semester hours) each regular semester and summer session. Spouses of full-time employees will receive a waiver for one-half assessed tuition. Spouses of part-time employees are eligible to have one-fourth of assessed tuition waived. There is reciprocity with Wyoming community colleges.The University provides Workers' Compensation and Unemployment insurance and makes the employer contribution for Social Security and Medicare. Benefited employees are eligible to receive discounts on athletic season tickets, use the UW Libraries, purchase access to recreational facilities and have UniWyo Federal Credit Union membership.
